From Our History – People and Machines

SYNPO’s instrumentation and production equipment have always reflected the organization’s focus and specialization. The analysis and testing departments had to be adequately equipped as early as 1946, although the conditions at the time were very modest. As a result, achievements relied primarily on the education, experience, and professional skills of the employees dedicated to individual methods. In the case of more advanced analytical techniques, it was essential for each instrumental method to be mastered in depth by a specialist capable of correctly interpreting the results – it was precisely this high-quality interpretation that provided significant added value. For both the production department and the coatings testing laboratory, machine workshops were indispensable. In cooperation with electricians, they were able to manufacture equipment commonly available in the West, producing it in the best quality possible with the materials and resources available at the time. Some of these devices are still in use today, as certain methodologies have not fundamentally changed, and the instruments have therefore retained both their functionality and relevance. Before 1989, ingenuity, technical skill, and the ability to improvise often represented the only possible substitute for limited access to foreign technologies and hard-currency resources.

The political and social changes after 1989 opened the door not only to stronger international cooperation, but also to faster access to modern technologies, materials, and state-of-the-art instrumentation. Tasks that once required lengthy manual evaluation and work with limited measurement capabilities are now handled by sophisticated digital systems with high precision and efficiency. Technological progress has significantly transformed everyday laboratory work – from process automation and advanced analytical methods to rapid data processing and sharing. Nevertheless, the most important elements remain unchanged: the expertise, experience, and enthusiasm of the people behind the research.

Looking back at history reminds us how far science and research have progressed, while also highlighting the importance of keeping pace with technological development in the future.
